New Orleans, LA...Walter T. Zumpe, 85, a fifty year resident of New Orleans, LA, and former resident of Daleville, passed away unexpectedly August 29 during Hurricane Katrina.He was born in Daleville, IN, October 15, 1919, the son of Walter and Helen Grace Stewart Zumpe.He was a graduate of Daleville High School and a 1941 Ball State Teachers College (Ball State University)He retired as plant manager for C & S Division of Standard Brands, Inc of New York, Chicago, and New Orleans after serving for 21 years.He served 19 years as Vice President of production with Wm. B. Reily and Company, Inc.He was a member of the Lakeside Veterans Group.He was a US Army flying cadet, class of 1941F. He served the US Army Air Force from 1941-1945. He served three years and two weeks in the European Theater of WW 2 and was a POW-MIA in Hungary and Germany from 1944-1945.He flew Spitfires for the 52nd Fighter Group, 4 rth Squadron and B-17's for the 301st Bomber Group of the 419th Squadron.He was awarded 11 battle stars, the air medal with 4 silver stars, Distinguished Flying Cross, Prisoner of War Medal and citation for valor by General Twining, Commander of the 15th Air Force.He is survived by his devoted wife: June Hartway Zumpe of New Orleans, daughters: Leslie Sharon and Lisa, son in law: Larry Gillmer granddaughters: Aimee' Hayes, Sacha Peiser and Julie Faust, 7 great grandchildren and brother-in-law: Ben McKay.Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters: Jean Sumpe White and Janet Zumpe McKay, brothers: Keith and Jack Zumpe.Funeral services will be held on Friday at 2:00 PM at the Ballard and Sons Funeral Home, 8212 South Walnut Street, Daleville with Pastor Roberta Hart from Union, Ohio.Friends may call on Thursday from 6-8 PM and 2 hours before the services on Friday.Burial will follow in Saunders Cemetery in Daleville.Online Guestbook is available at:
