Richard John Benfield

February 11, 1944 — November 5, 2021

Middletown...Richard John Benfield 77, resident of Middletown passed away November 5, 2021 at Ascension Health St. Johns Hospital in Anderson after a lengthy illness. He was born in Anderson, February 11, 1944 the son of Herbert and Thelma Maxine Manis Benfield.  He was a 1962 graduate of Middletown High School and retired from General Motors (Guide Lamp).

He was a member and Past Master of Middletown Lodge F & AM #271 of Middletown and the Sixth Street Christian Church

He worked in supervision for General Motors and was also in the security department of Hoosier Park.

He Played basketball for the legendary coach Von Jameson at Middletown, and was president of the 4H Horse and Pony Club of Henry County.  He also served as president of the Indiana Saddle Horse Association and the Indiana Quarter Horse Association.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years Carole (Myers) of Middletown, 2 daughters Sabrina (Scott) Hubbard of Pendleton and Kristina (Mike) Murrell of Greenwood, 3 grandchildren: Brittney (Andy) Ebbert of Pendleton, Nicholas Hubbard of Pendleton and Isaac Murrell of Greenwood, 1 great grandson Grayson Robert Ebbert of Pendleton, brother in law Jeff Myers, nephew Brandon Myers and niece Michelle Myers, additional special family, Starr (Tom) McCord, Willard Hennis and Jim Pell, as well as additional nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Herbert and Maxine Manis Benfield and John and Catherine (Miller) Hennis.

A celebration of life gathering will be held on Saturday November 13, 2021 from 2-4 at Ballard and Sons Funeral Home, 118 South 5th, Middletown with Masonic rites given at 4:00 PM.
