Phillip "Buckwheat" Kinnett

June 26, 1952 — May 13, 2022

Phillip "Buckwheat" Kinnett, 69, a local legend of Middletown, passed away Friday, May 13, 2022 at Signature Care Nursing Home in Muncie. He was born on June 26, 1952 in Henry County, IN a son of the late James Lee and Laura Alice (McLain) Kinnett.

Buckwheat was an avid passionate gardener. The day of his passing, Buckwheat had a friend till his garden so it was ready for planting when he arrived home. He also enjoyed farming and driving a semi for the farmers; driving a semi was Buckwheat's main occupation prior to an accident that left him unable to drive over the road. He was a socialite and had many friends in Middletown and they all had nicknames; it was common not to know ones real name. Buckwheat was a prankster, always making jokes; he didn't have a serious bone in his body but when he was rarely serious, you knew it. Buckwheat was a awesome cook especially for being a bachelor and although his cooking was great it could never be rated as healthy. He was a 1970 graduate of Shenandoah High School, loved listening to 70's music and especially loved his little Jack Russell, Sparky, who never ate dog food but cube steak and oatmeal raisin cookies.

Although Buckwheat was geared to be a father of boys, he was instead blessed with three girls that are left to cherish his memory, Kiley (Johnny) Ohl of Monterey, CA, Jamie Lee Kinnett of Middletown, Kimberly French of Middletown; grandchildren, Bailey McAtee of Anderson, Killian Sutherlin of Anderson, Brayden French of Middletown, Isabelle Kinnett of Middletown, Halle Sanders of Middletown; great grandson, Dean Martin; sister, Wanda Kissick of New Castle; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Buckwheat was preceded in death by his siblings, Anita McCambridge, Jim Kinnett, Janet Byrne.

Visitation will be from 12:30pm-2:30pm Tuesday, May 17, 2022 at Ballard and Sons Funeral Home in Middletown. Graveside services will follow at 3:00pm at Miller Cemetery in Middletown. You may express condolences or share memories of Buckwheat at www.ballardandsons.com .
