MaryGayle Hartzell, 75, of West Lafayette passed away on Monday, April 3, 2023. She was born April 25, 1947 in Delaware County to the late Jim and Vita (Orebaugh) Hartzell.
MaryGayle was known as a sewing wizard. She was always excited to help family and friends with craft garments. She was always a hard worker with a keen mind to solve problems. MaryGayle always would share stories about her nieces and nephews she helped raise. Mary was a member of the Fiber Guild and participated in several exhibits at the Tippecanoe Arts Federation.
She was a huge supporter of Purdue University. MaryGayle attained her bachelor’s degree from Purdue in 1969, she then furthered her education with a master’s degree in 1970 and then a PHD in education in 1982. MaryGayle was an avid member in several clubs and groups, Purdue Womens Club where she served as president 2020-2021, American Sewing Guild, Indiana Consumer Trends Council, and Kappa Omicron Nu Honor Society. MaryGayle was a member of a very supportive Mary L. Matthews group with a common value of health and human sciences.
MaryGayle is survived by three nephews, Harold K. Hartzell (Topeka, IN), James Hartzell (Yorktown), Dave Barber (West Layette); five nieces, Sharla Hensley (Daleville), Mindy Brown (Humbolot, IL), Jennifer Speedy (Chesterfield), Missy Richardson (Muncie), and Jane Buck (Muncie).
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Harold Hartzell; two sisters, Joyce Barber and Kris Katzmarek.
Services will be held at 1:00 pm Monday April 10, 2023 at Ballard and Sons Funeral Home in Daleville with Pastor Ned Clark officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 am until the time of the service. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society at 5635 West 96th Street, #100, Indianapolis, Indiana 46278. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
