Martha Ellen (Gray) Smith, 97, of rural Middletown past away August 23rd following a brief illness. Martha was born in Henry Township South of New Castle on Nov. 11, 1921 to Gurney and Maurine (Shepherd) Gray. She graduated from New Castle High School in the class of 1940. Having an identical twin sister (Ruth), many simply called her "Gray Twin" because she and Ruth looked so much alike. Martha graduated from Miami-Jacobs Business College in Dayton, Ohio. She married Thomas (Al) Smith on August 9, 1941. She worked at Ward-Stillson in Anderson during the War before moving to New Castle until Al returned home from the U.S. Navy serving in the Pacific War Zone. She and Al were married for 53 years before he passed away in 1994. Martha was an accountant in the office of Dwight A. Shepherd for many years before operating her own accounting business. She was a member of Center Chapel United Methodist church for many years before joining the Middletown Church of the Nazarene as a member.
Martha is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Melvin) Vancil of Antioch, California, sons Allen (Serlina) Smith and Stanley (Diane) Smith, both of Middletown. She is also survived by grandchildren David (Amy) Vancil, Kevin (Kayla) Smith, Loren (Stacy) Smith, Kelly (Anna-Lissa) Smith, and Colleen (Jonathan) Staser. Also Surviving are 18 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her twin sister Ruth Best, and grandson Roland Smith.
Services will be held Thursday August 29th at 3 p.m. at Ballard and Sons Funeral Home in Middletown, Ind. Reverend Phil Rogers will be officiating the service. Visitation will be from 1p.m. until the time of service, burial to follow at Mechanicsburg Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Middletown Church of the Nazarene or to any charity of your choice.
