Marjorie Maude Howell

October 4, 1922 — July 9, 2018

Just as she had lived her life with quiet grace and dignity, Marjorie Maude (Wright) Howell of Daleville passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning of July 9th.  She was born in 1922 on the farm of her parents, Claude E. and Mary Patterson Wright near Cowan, Indiana.

Marjorie was raised during the Great Depression and learned at an early age the value of hard work at her family's dairy farm.  This ethic remained with her the rest of her life; she never knew an idle moment and was the perfect example to her family of industry and diligence.  She was the Salutatorian of Cowan High School Class of 1940 and studied home economics at Ball State Teachers College where she graduated in 1944.  She taught at Mt. Summit High School for two years before her marriage.  She married Warren D. Howell in 1946 after he returned from serving in the Philippines during WWII.

Marjorie was a full partner to her husband as they worked together building their family farm producing grain and raising hogs and a herd of Angus cattle.  They were married, March 15, 1946  and continued for 68 years before Warren's death in 2014.  Marjorie and Warren were the parents of David W. Howell (Mary) of Middletown, Philip A. Howell (Judy) of Winchester and Anne E. Sullivan (Don) of Daleville.  After her youngest child was in school Marjorie taught home economics, health and physical education at Daleville High School for nearly twenty-five years.  She also managed the cafeteria at the school for many years.  Both Warren and Marjorie encouraged and were delighted in the success of the young people who came under their influence at school, on the farm or in 4-H activities.  She was a gifted and prolific seamstress and hand craft artist throughout her life.  Her industriousness and love for flowers led her to maintain classic and expansive rose and vegetable gardens until prevented by advancing age.

Marjorie was a member of the Daleville Christian Church, Christian Women's Fellowship, Daleville Chapter #568 Order of Eastern Star for 62 years, Daleville Women's Club, and Jolly Juniors Extension Homemakers Club.  She was a Life member of Indiana Angus Auxiliary and the American Angus Association.  She was also a 4-H leader and a sought-after foods and clothing judge at county fairs.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a sister, Elizabeth Smith (Doyle) and her brother Daniel Wright (JoAnn).  She is survived by her children and their families.  Marjorie was blessed with nine grandchildren: Adam Howell (Keri) of Middletown, Amanda Howell of Middletown, Aaron Howell (Katherine) of Pendleton, Audrey Howell Behrendt (Mike) of Yorktown, Emily Howell Reynolds (David) of Owensboro, KY, Andy Howell of Marengo, Brian Howell of Tipton, Sarah Ainsa (Michael) of Marana, AZ and Katherine Guenthenspberger (David) of Daleville,  and seventeen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews sister-in-law: Joann Wright.

Friends may call at Ballard and Sons Funeral Home, 8212 South Walnut Street in Daleville from 6-8PM on Friday.  Funeral services will be at Ballard's on Saturday morning at 10 AM with burial to follow at Tomlinson Cemetery.  In keeping with the encouragement of education that Marjorie strongly supported friends may donate to the Marie Bowen Scholarship fund in lieu of flowers.  Checks should be issued to Delaware County Extension Homemakers and sent to Treena Smith, 10660 South Twilight Road, Daleville, IN 47334.
