Madonna Catherine (Vannatter) Zirkle, 87, passed away on August 10, 2022, at Primrose Memory Care in Anderson. She was born in Anderson on November 22, 1934, the daughter of Herrall and Margaret (Muterspaugh) Vannatter.
Madonna moved to Middletown in 1936 where she lived the majority of her life. She was a 1952 graduate of Middletown High School where she was active in the band and choir accompanist. She was active in 4-H and was crowned queen of the Henry County 4-H Dress Review. Madonna competed in statewide sewing and baking competitions winning several blue ribbons.
She married Bob Zirkle on August 2, 1953 and had four children together. During life, Madonna loved to read, sew and be a homemaker. She worked for 13 years within the Northwestern School Corporation (Shenandoah) and worked many years at the Instructional Materials Center at Anderson University where she retired from in 1991. She then volunteered at the Shenandoah Elementary School, St. John's Hospital and assisted with the Herbalife weight loss and nutrition business for her daughter and son-in-law.
Madonna was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church in Middletown. For twenty-five years Madonna gave piano lessons and played in the church services, weddings and various community events. She directed and played for the church choir many years.
As she was convalescing for the last several years, she was part of the bible study and helped fund the butterfly ministry at the Bethel United Methodist Church in Anderson.
Madonna was most thankful for all the many people who were a great influence to her spirituality.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; brother, Richard Vannatter; niece, Darci Hill; and grandchild, Jaimie Beall.
Madonna is survived by her children, Jeffrie Van Zirkle (Pam), Bethanne Zirkle, Nancy Zirkle, and Lezlee Beall (John); grandchildren, Amanda Morrison (Chris-Michael), Jonathon Zirkle (Adrienne ), Geoff Dickerson, Courtney Dickerson, and Evan Beall; great grandchildren, Jacquelyn Morrison, Liberty Morrison, Jordan Dickerson Warmke, Nathan Dickerson Warmke, and Michael Dickerson; sister-in-law, Mary Oliver Vannatter; nephew, Scott Vannatter; great nephew, Aaron Vannatter; and great nieces, Aarika White (Josh) and Adrienne Koontz (Lance).
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2022 at 11:00 AM with Jeffrie Zirkle officiating at Ballard and Sons Funeral Home in Middletown. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Middletown First United Methodist Church, the Bethel United Methodist Church in Anderson and the Youth for Christ in Anderson.
