Larry Wiesenauer, age 78, surrounded by family, passed to his lord on May 26th, 2022 in Anderson, Indiana. He is preceded in death by his parents, Carl & Nedra (Gray); and his brother Steve. He is survived by his love of 19 years, Loretta; his children, Rees, Laura (Jason) Clark & Joshua (Brittany); his grandchildren, Sarah, Alexis, Connor, Nathan, Mea & Jordan; brothers, Max & Phil; & extended family, Eric, Brian, Kaylynn & Harper.
He was born on August 11, 1943 in Marion, Indiana and in 1957 the family relocated to Anderson. He joined the Navy Reserve in 1960, graduated from Highland HS in 1961, and went into active duty in Vietnam in June 1962.
Larry served aboard several destroyers and rose to the rank of ETN-2 (E5). During service aboard the USS Lofberg (DD-759) their destroyer division established Station Yankee in the Gulf of Tonkin. He operated ECM surveillance in the Combat Information Center and was awarded two Armed Forces Expeditionary medals. The destroyer squadron was awarded the red ASW "A" for proven proficiency in anti-submarine warfare against two Russian submarines.
He returned to Anderson in May of 1965 and worked with various companies as an electronics technician. He then spent 18 years as an Installation Engineer for LeFebure Bank Equipment before having to go on SSDI due to his PTSD and Bi-Polar Disorder. Larry Received therapy from the VA Hospital in Marion, Indiana the remainder of his adult life.
In 1992, he was invited to attend Partners in Policymaking, a disabilities advocacy course funded by the Governors Planning Council for People with disabilities. Larry lobbied with other advocates, and was present when Governor Evan Bayh signed the Service Dog Protection Act (No. 284) on July 1, 1996. He volunteered administrative work in Special Education, Section 504, Civil Rights complaints, and improved the quality of education for children with disabilities in Central Indiana. In May of 1998, along with a support group he formed, he traveled to Washington, DC to march on the Capitol in support of awareness in Mental Health.
On January 5, 1998, President Clinton awarded Justin Dart, a National Advocate for Persons with Disabilities and the "Godfather of the ADA", the Medal of Freedom. Justin named Larry and several other advocates as Patriot Recipients. Governor Mitch Daniels also appointed him to Indiana Protection and Advocacy's Mental Health Advisory Council.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2022 at 1:00 PM at the Chesterfield Community Church of God. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until the time of the service. Arrangements have been entrusted to Ballard and Sons Funeral Home.
