Kurt Dean Mathews departed this world on May 4th, 2023. Kurt was born May 20, 1971 in New Castle. Kurt was a loving, devoted father that loved spending time with his daughter, Maddie. He would take her for bike rides, to the movies and for long drives in the car making it a game for her to figure out how to get home. He also enjoyed attending her band events, dance recitals and anything she participated in. Kurt also got a second chance at love with Cathy, they enjoyed the outdoors, camping, wood working and traveling. He loved his family and spent hours researching, tracking and learning about his family history with his brother Jay and cousin Shonda. Kurt was a loving man who never met a stranger. He always had a smile or silly anecdote to share. His story telling ability was one of his many talents. He was the ray of sunshine in whatever he was involved in. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Kurt served his community in a multitude of ways, he spent his whole life dedicated to public service. Lieutenant Mathews worked as a Paramedic for Delaware County EMS for the last 17 years. He was a lifetime member of the Salem Township Volunteer Fire Department. He also worked at Henry County EMS, East Madison Fire Territory, Aid Ambulance and Rural Metro. He also worked as a reserve police officer for Muncie City Police and Daleville Police.
He is preceded in death by his parents Ernest and Marilyn Mathews.
He is survived by his daughter Madalyn Grace, her mother Seana, brother Jay Mathews, nephew Chad, many cousins, and girlfriend Cathy.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 11, 2023 at Salem Township Volunteer EMS/Fire Department at 4 p.m. with Ryan Ballard officiating.
