Greenwich, CT...John A. (Jack) Schlegel, 70, a thirty year resident of Greenwich, CT, passed away on May 10, 2005 at Greenwich Hospital.Born in Daleville, Indiana, October 22, 1934, he was the son of the late John M. and Pauline Risseck Schlegel.Jack graduated from Purdue University in 1956 with a BA in Agriculture. After serving in the Army where he was stationed in Korea, obtaining the rank of First Lieutenant, he returned to Purdue to complete his MA in 1960 and Ph.D. in Microbiology in 1963.He moved to Neenah, Wisconsin to work for the Marathon Corporation, later named the American Can Company. He relocated to Connecticut in 1967 with the company where he remained for 12 years. He did consulting for IPCC, doing many client studies and wrote a booklet for the AMA. He joined Merle Corporation in 1990 and became a Senior Sales Representative when it was acquired by Engelhard Corporation.Jack was the Pewee football coach for North Mianus Cowboys from 1965-1975 and taught many young men including his son Brad and Steve Young, a 2005 NFL Football Hall of Fame inductee.Jack dedicated his life toward helping people. His passions were his family, Purdue University, The Second Congregational Church, especially the Labyrinth Project, and singing in the choir. He enjoyed cross-country skiiing with his children and grandchildren. He followed his love of racing as a young boy with his father at the Indianapolis 500 and shared the joy with his son at Pocono.During his four year struggle with Pancreatic Cancer, Jack refused to let it slow him down.Jack served as the past President for Purdue Alumni association of Connecticut and was it's present treasurer. He ran the PARTS college recruitment fairs for Purdue at local high schools.He served as Council President, Vic President, deacon and chairman of Buildings and Grounds, as well as being involved with the Stephen Ministries for the church.He was past president of Greenwich Chapter of Meals on Wheels. He was an active participant at Pacific House, the Homeless Shelter in Stamford. He participated in Americares projects, Heart Care International and Habitat for Humanity.He is survived by his wife of 32 years: Donna, his son: John Bradley Schlegel (Nancy), their children: Eleanor, Daniel and Sarah of Stamford, CT, and daughter: Lynn Wezenski (Mark) and their children: Erika and Mark Mitchell of Orange, CT, and 1 stepson: Jerry Grygny (Julie) and their children: Cole, Chase, Ashley, and Ben of Neenah, WI. He was preceded in death by a stepson: Steve Grygny.Memorial services will be held on Friday at 10:00 am at Trinity Community Church in Daleville with Pastor Paul Pletcher officiating.Burial will follow in Mt.
