John James Rhodes, Sr

March 8, 1927 — July 31, 2018

John James Rhodes Sr., 91, of Middletown, peacefully passed away on July 31st, 2018.

He was born on March 8th, 1927, in Stevenson, CA to Frederick and Louise Rhodes. During WWII he was a gunner on a Grumman Avenger TBM-3E Torpedo Bomber. In the years following the war, he was an active racer in the USAC racing series. During his years in Fresno, CA he owned and operated Sunnyside Bowl as well as Classic Cut, a barbershop in which he was the choice barber of many coaches and players from the Oakland Raiders, the Fresno State Bulldogs, and, his favorite team, the San Francisco 49ers.

He was an avid NASCAR fan and held a lifelong interest in planes, several of which he piloted. He was frequent guest speaker at events in Oshkosh, WI, during which he appeared live on the American Heroes Channel. In 2014 he and several other WWII veterans were honored during a TBM flier reunion at Port Clinton Airport. The following year, he took part in the Indy Honor Flight to Washington DC.

He is survived by his three children: Cathy Fachin of Martinez, CA, and John (Brenda) and Fred (Nancy) Rhodes, both of Middletown, as well as eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
