Joan K. Allen, 86, passed away at St. Vincents Hospital in Indianapolis on June 27th. Joan was born March 9, 1932, in Anderson, Ind. to Howard and Helen Kline where she attended the Church of the Brethren for many years.
Joan married Marion Allen in 1948 and setup home on the farm near Middletown, Ind., and from there raised their two children, Michael and Deborah. She was very active in Eastern Star and rose to the order of Worthy Matron of Chapter 110 in Middletown. After Marion's unexpected passing in 1971, Joan continued to live and work the farm for many years, and loved her part-time job at Mary Woodburys in New Castle.
During her retirement, Joan was a snowbird shuttling back and forth between her home in New Castle and her condo in Vero Beach, Fla. In 2009, after too many hurricanes, she settled in the McCordsville area to live with her son Michael, where she worked tirelessly to assist him during his final years and illnesses.
While Joan was preceded in death by her husband and children, she is survived today by her grandchildren, Matthew Allen (husband James Cloud), Dawn Midelis (husband James), Kyle Allen (wife Rachel); her great-grandchildren Connor, Seth, and Norah Allen; her siblings Jean Shroyer, Jan Parry, Connie Hummel (husband Ernie), and Don (wife Shirley); and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relations. She will be sorely missed by all her family and friends.
Calling will be at Ballard & Sons Funeral Home at 118 S. 5th Street, Middletown, Ind. on July 5 from 4-7:00pm. Memorial services in her honor will be held at the funeral home, July 6, at 11:00am with a social hour following for family, friends and guests to celebrate the life of Joan at the nearby Middletown Civic Center at 329 Locust Street, Middletown. A private cremation burial will follow at a later date at Mechanicsburg Cemetery.
