New Castle...Jenny Kathryn Cundiff Carter, 94, joined her loved ones in heaven on Monday, April 12th, 2004, at Henry County Memorial Hospital in New Castle after an extended illness. She had been residing with her nephew and niece, George and Zeta Carter of Daleville for the past nine months.She was born September 29, 1909 in Russellville, Kentucky to her parents; William Robert Cundiff and Belle Johnson Cundiff. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 26 years; Ollie Gordon Carter who died in 1973 and one brother; Robert Cundiff, who died in 1999.Kathryn is survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins; Bill Carter of Virginia, Emogene Carter of Indianapolis, Blanche Thompson of New Castle, Margaret Hall of Milton, Don Carter of New Castle, Kathy McQueen of Farmland, Jean Morris and Louise Herder of New Castle, Lois Dahl, Louie Gene Carter of Houston and Deo Carter of Indianapolis, Cousins: John and Tom Cundiff of Terre Haute, Pamela Cundiff of New Hampshire, Bea Cundiff of Owensboro, KY and friends; Harry and Juanita Thomas, Marsha Stone, Kathy Chaney and William Bush of Irvine, KY.As a child living in Russellville, her father worked as an Engineer on the Southern Bell Railroad. The family later moved to Lexington where her father was instrumental in completing the railroad from Lexington to Ravenna. The family settled in a small town of Irvine.Kathryn was a graduate of Irvine High School and Eastern Kentucky Univesity in Richmond. She recieved her Masters Degree from the University of Kentucky and attended the University of Louisville for additional Social Work studies.During WW 2, she worked as a medical Social Worker in the Red Cross and the VA Hospital in Louisville.She married Ollie Gordon Carter in 1947.She loved Gathering history and genealogy. She was instrumental in gathering all the historical facts of Estill County, KY. She placed many historical markers in the county and helped organize the Head Start program. She taught school in Estill County and recieved an award for ""Kindness and Understanding"" from the Class of 1974-75. Upon retirement, she worked for the State of Kentucky for 23 years as a child welfare worker. She ws honored in the Hall of Fame for the Estill County Community in 1999. She recieved the honorary DAR award in 2003 and was a life member of the DAR. She was a member of the Kentucky Historical Society, Estill County Garden Club, the Almuni Association of UK, the First Baptist Church of Irvine and the National Society Magna Charter of Dames, the George Washington Family history Association, and Daughter of American Colonist.Funeral Services will be held on Thursday at 2:00 PM at Ballard and Sons Funeral Home, 118 South 5th, Middletown with Rev. Marty Ballard and family members officiating.Friends may call from noon until the time of the services.Graveside services will be held on Friday at 1:00 PM at Evergreen Cemetery in Greenville, Kentucky.Online Guestbook is available at:
