Middletown...George R. (Bob) Smith, 71, Middletown, died March 30, 2006, at the Heart Center in Indianapolis after a brief illness.He was born September 3, 1934, in Henry County and was a Middletown resident after retiring from the US Army in 1973. He served 20 years in the US Army with two tours of duty in the Vietnam War. He went on to work 26 years teaching electronics at the Indiana State Reformatory in Pendleton retiring in 2000. In his retirement, George volunteered over 2200 hours at St. Johns Medical Center in Anderson in the purchasing department.He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Middletown. He was a 1953 graduate of New Castle High School and earned a degree in Electronics from Ivy Tech, Muncie.He is survived by his wife: Joan (Coon) Smith, whom he married March 21, 1960 of Middletown; daughter: Kendra Sue (Smith) and husband Dan Mills of Greenfield and son: Jason Rex and wife Kirsten Smith of Anderson, 1 sister: Mary Imogene (Smith) Tyner of New Castle, 4 grandchildren: Lauren and Shannon Smith of Anderson, Nicole (Mills) Ballard of Indianapolis and Daniel Mills of Springfield, MO, and 2 great grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents: Ora and Loughie Smith, sisters: Alice (Smith) Bright and June (Smith) Eddington and brothers: Paul, Doyle and Floyd Smith.Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Monday at Ballard and Sons Funeral Home, 118 South 5th, Middletown with Rev. David Waters officiating.Military Rites will follow in Mechanicsburg Cemetery.Friends may call on Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the funeral home.Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Association, American Parkinson Association, or the Henry County Heart Society.Online Guestbook at: www.ballardandsons.com
