Fredrick Maurice Jones

Fredrick M. (Shorty) Jones, 95, of Anderson passed away peacefully at his home February 25th, 2023 surrounded by his family. Shorty was born on September 11, 1927 to Richard and Alberta Jones. His family resided in the Chesterfield area and he graduated from Daleville High School, class of 1945. He was in the Navy before marrying Roberta Schlegel on May 10, 1946. They were married 57 years before she passed in 2003.
Shorty farmed and milked Jersey cows with help from his wife and children for many years. He drove a school bus for the Metropolitan School District of Anderson (Chesterfield, Kilbuck, and Highland school) for 38 years.
He enjoyed watching his grandsons in athletics through the years as well as being a Purdue sports fan. The 4-H Fair and showing dairy cows was a family affair that he enjoyed. His other activities included Kiwanis Club of Chesterfield and the American Legion for almost 50 years. He is a lifetime member of the Fleet Reserve Association. Shorty was a hardworking, gentle soul and an animal lover. He will be greatly missed by family.
Shorty is survived by two daughters, Malynna (James) Silverthorn of Burke, VA and Carolyn Melson (Robert deceased) of Anderson; two sons Jerrold L. Jones of Anderson and David K. Jones of Anderson; one sister Ruth (Jones) Walker of Anderson, sister-in-law Nancy Jones. 5 grandsons Jeff (Meghann) Silverthorn of Parker, CO and Robb (Kerri) Melson of Noblesville, Kyle Melson of Anderson, Alex (Julie) Jones of Greenfield, Max (Stephanie) Jones of Castle Rock, CO. One granddaughter Amy (Sean) Delaney. Five great grandsons, Maverick, Declan, Julian, Brody and Ryan, several Schlegel, Gahimer, and Jones nieces and nephews.
Shorty was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers Robert (Bob) Jones and Max H. Jones, one sister Alice Gahimer, Brother-in-laws; Don M. Walker and Joe Gahimer. Other in-laws that preceded Shorty in death are Robert and Irene Schlegel, Don and Ruth Schlegel, Elizabeth, William Walker, and Ralph (Marjorie) Schelgel.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00pm Thursday, March 2nd, 2023 at Ballard and Sons Funeral Home in Daleville. Visitation will be from 11:00am Thursday until the time of service with burial following at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. You may express condolences or share memories of Shorty at www.ballardandsons.com .
