Middletown...Dr. Elmer C. Eichhorn, 83, resident of Middletown, died Monday at St. John's Medical Center in Anderson, after an extended illness.He was born in Clarington, Ohio, December 27, 1920, the son of George and Laura (Walter) Eichhorn. He was a 1939 graduate of Salem-Clarington Public High School where he was valedictorian of his class. He received his Doctorate Degree in Veterinary Medicine from Ohio State University in 1947, graduating cum laude. After graduation he worked for the Health Department in Toledo, Ohio until 1951, working as a meat inspector. He served in the US Army from 1943-1944, and the US Navy from 1945 to 1946.He and his wife, Vera, whom he married March 22, 1942, moved to Middletown in 1951 where they lived and maintained a successful veterinary practice until 1990. He greatly enjoyed being involved in causes benefiting the Middletown community and was an active member of the Middletown United Methodist Church, the Middletown Masonic Lodge #271 F & AM where he was Past Master and the Order of the Eastern Star #110 where he was Past Worthy Patron. He had been Treasurer of the Boy Scouts Troop 279 for many years, served on the Habitat for Humanity committee, served as Director Emeritus of First United Bank, member of the Middletown Historical Society, Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, and the Murat Shrine. He was a member of the Middletown American Legion, the Elks Lodge of Muncie, and an active contributor to the Muncie Mission. He was a life member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association.He had been a licensed pilot and rode Harley Davidson motorcycles.He owned and operated many rental properties in Middletown, Muncie, and New Castle. He was an avid reader and loved to travel the world.He was preceded in death by his wife Vera (Davis)Eichhorn in 1997, his parents: George and Laura (Walter) Eichhorn, a sister: Lena Mick, and 1 brother: Harold Eichhorn.Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law: Gregory (Irene) Eichhorn of League City, TX, Victor (Clata) Eichhorn of Middletown, Curtis (Susan) Eichhorn of Pendleton and Dr. Daniel (Carole) Eichhorn of Middletown, nine grandchildren: John, Jim (Susan), Casey, Dieter, Jeff (Candice), Brad, Jobie, Kyle and Lara Maye and many nieces and nephews and friends.Also surviving is one sister: Dorothy (Marshall) Hilton of Toledo, Ohio.Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 2:00 PM at the Middletown United Methodist Church with Pastor Jeff Landon officiating. Burial will follow in Miller Cemetery.Friends may call at the Ballard and Sons Funeral Home, 118 South 5th, Middletown, on Friday from 2-4 and 6-9 with OES Memorial services at 6:00 and Masonic memorial services at 6:30 at the funeral home.Memorial contributions may be made to the Middletown United Methodist Church, the Henry County Community Foundation, or the Middletown Fall Creek Emergency Medical Services, through the funeral home.Online guestbook is available at:
