Middletown...Dorothea W. Ballard, 101, resident of Middletown, passed away Friday morning at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie. She was born in Ladysmith, Wisconsin, June 3, 1917, the daughter of Otto and Martha Krueger Winters. She was a graduate of Merrill High School and Franklin Blvd School of Nursing in Chicago.
She was a member of the Yorktown Church of the Nazarene and attended for many years the United Methodist Church of Middletown. She was a supervising nurse at Henry County Memorial Hospital and worked with her husband as owner of Ballard and Sons Funeral Home in Middletown and Daleville since 1949.
She was instrumental in the 60's assisting in the Special Education start up in Middletown as well as the American Red Cross. She organized the "Gold Teens" group for high school students assisting nursing homes and mental health needs of the community. She was a member and past president of the Federated Womens Clubs, and PSI Iota XI sorority. She was member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a board member of the Henry County Health Department, member of the WSCS of the Methodist Church, and the Retired Nurses Association of Henry County,
She assisted in the organization of the Shepherds Closet clothing ministry and loved the Red Hat Society.
She was a member ot the Dietrich Park board for many years for which her husband was a founding member.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and her husband: George.
Survivors are two sons, Jon Fredric Ballard (Brenda) of Daleville and George M. (Gina) of Middletown, grandchildren: Katie (Mick) Leas of Warren, Kyle (LeAnn) Ballard of Muncie, Ryan (Tracy) Ballard of Yorktown and Kayla (Tim) Hall of Daleville, great grandchildren: Thomas, Buelah, Samuel, Kennedy, Madison, Monroe, Thomas , Aubrie, Cambri, Elley, Maecy and Peyton, two wonderful caregivers and family members: Tammi Evans and Nikki Staggs, nieces and nephews.
Public visitation will be held on Wednesday from 2-8 PM at Ballard and Sons Funeral Home, 118 South 5th, Middletown.
A private family service will be held on Thursday.
Burial will be in Miller Cemetery, Middletown.
At Nana's request in lieu of flowers, monetary memorials to Dietrich Memorial Park and if you come to the calling please bring a can of food for the Middletown Food pantry.
