After a lengthy illness, The Reverend Clyde Maynard Powell Jr, 86, of Middletown, passed to a better life on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2025. Commonly known as “Maynard” to those who knew him, he was born on July 9, 1938, to the late Clyde Maynard Powell Sr. and Ina (Baldwin) Powell, in Fredericksburg, VA.
Beginning with an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering at Virginia Tech, and finishing with a Master’s degree in Divinity from Garrett Theological Seminary at Northwestern University, his call to ministry included 52 years of serving churches in both Virginia and Indiana. From the pulpit and with music, with the confident joy of a man who loved the Lord.
His last full-time calling was at Sixth Street Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Middletown, IN, where he served from 1996 until 2014. With his music, his wisdom and his incredible joyous laugh he guided others to seek the best in themselves and others in service, imploring “Go out into the world..” at the end of each service. He himself left a legacy of meaningful service in each community he lived in, reaching across religious and social boundaries, with ecumenical zeal. Many of these programs live on.
Maynard leaves behind at home, his wife, Mary; grandson, Andrew D. Houghton whom he helped raise. Others of his family include his daughter, Mary (David) Quick of Las Vegas, NV; sister, Bonnie (Richard) Crabbs of Cincinnati, OH; stepson, Douglas Houghton of Nashville, TN; grandchildren, Davison (Lindsay) Quick of Las Vegas, NV, Rachel (Sean) Quick of Maryland, Zach and Gabe Hazen of Lapel; great granddaughter, Kira Quick of Las Vegas, NV.
There will be a private Celebration of Life in the summer near Maynards birthday. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Ballard and Sons Funeral Home in Middletown.
Memorial contributions can be sent to The Middletown Food Pantry, Middletown Fire Department, Middletown EMS or the Middletown Library.
