Sulphur Springs....Charles Clarence Riley, 93, resident of Sulphur Springs, died April 5, 2018 after an extended illness.
He was born May 7, 1924 in Honey Creek, the son of Clarence and Julia Fadely Riley and lived most of his life in Honey Creek and Madison County.
He was a graduate of Middletown High School class of 1942. He served with the US Navy during WW 2 in the Pacific Theatre and Australia as a 2nd Class Gunner's Mate on the USS Octan. He was in Guam at the war's end and remembered the day well. "The ships in the harbor began blowing their horns and whistles and helicopters flew low to the ground announcing the war was over." While on Guam he was responsible for guarding enemy prisoners. He continued to serve in the Naval Reserves for over 20 years.
He was a member of the Honey Creek United Methodist Church and retired from General Motors in 1982 with forty years of service. He was a 60 year member of the Mechanicsburg Masonic Lodge #392 F & AM, Monroe Township Conservation Club, Daleville Trap and Skeet Club, National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association and a proud member of the NRA.
Survivors are his wife Rosalie (Harrison) Riley, whom he married on May 1, 2005, stepdaughter: Pamela Blake of Alexandria, grandchildren: Joi (Dan) Walker, New Palestine, Julianne (Bruce) Sheridan, Allen Park, MI and Chad (Jennifer) Blake of Anthem, AZ, great grandchildren: Samantha Sheridan, Hannah Sheridan, Cooper Blake and Julia Blake and family members: Susan and Scott Huer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Cora Hall Riley, sister, Bonnie and stepdaughter and her husband, Judith and Gary Cullen.
A Celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 am at Ballard and Sons Funeral Home, 118 South 5th, Middletown, IN with Pastor Cindy Upchurch officiating. Burial will follow in Miller Cemetery, Middletown.
Friends may call on Monday at the funeral home from 3-7 PM with Masonic rites at 6:30.
Memorials may be made to the Honey Creek United Methodist Church.
