Charles Price Halbert

Indianapolis, Indiana...Charles Price Halbert, 97, a former resident of Anderson and Indianapolis passed away Wednesday night at his residence. He was born July 8, 1914 in Yorktown, Indiana and was the son of Samuel Cincinnatus Halbert and Elizabeth (Logan) Halbert.He was employed by General Motors and worked in the Allison Division for 25 years as an inspector. He attended the Speedway Christian Church and was a Muncie Central High School Graduate. Before moving to Indianapolis he worked with his cousin Cathline and her husband Clarence Turman in Texas. He also worked for the Jewel Tea Company as a route salesaman for several years.His interests included building and racing hydroplane speed boats, loved flying, gliding and aircraft design. At the age of 60 he made a free fall sky diving jump at Ace airport in Anderson. He was a golfer and enjoyed listing to jazz and big band music. During the month of May, for several years, he served as a saftey patrolman at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He and his wife Virginia also rented rooms in their home to several drivers and crew members participating in that months activities in Indianapolis. He also mentor to his grandson and nephew and assisted them in building their Soap Box Derby cars.He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Virginia, a brother, Joseph (Joe) Wayne Halbert and a grandson Charles R. Vandergriff.Survivors include two daughters; Gay Lynn (Russel) Duvall of Indianapolis, Indiana; Elizabeth Ann (Robert) Converse, of Cameron Park, California. Two sisters: Alma Jane (Louis) Jack of Muncie, Indiana and Miriam (William) Bales also of Muncie. Several cousins, nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand nephews also survive.Burial will be Monday at 2 pm in Miller Cemetery, east of Middletown. There will be no visitation.
