Bernice Marian Shockley, a longtime resident of Henry County, passed away peacefully at Westminster Village in Muncie in the presence of her son, Paul Shockley. She lived a remarkable 105 years, leaving behind her legacy of love and laughter.
Born in Watseke, Illinois on August 5, 1919. Marian was the daughter of Robert and Juanita Mundy. She graduated from Pine Township School in Benton County in Indiana and attended one year at Ball State in Muncie, where she met the love of her life, John Shockley, through his sister, Roxie. They shared 63 years of marriage until John’s passing on October 29, 2004.
Marian is survived by her devoted children, the honorable Judge, Doris Shockley and her husband, James C. Slemp of West Sacramento, California; 2 sons, Paul Shockley, DVM of Middletown, Indiana and Jeffery (Sheila) Shockley of Daleville. She also leaves behind, Bill Buntin, Suzanne Hale Shockley and Voneta Adams.
Marian was preceded in death by five siblings; her beloved daughter, Judith Shockley Buntin; son, William Bruce Shockley; grandson, Scott Swingley.
In addition to her immediate family, Marian’s legacy continues through 12 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A vibrant member of The Eastern Star and many clubs, Marian thrived in community connection. She was deeply committed to her children and played an integral role along side John in building a prosperous farming operation. Marian enjoyed traveling across the United States and visited many foreign countries. Marian will be remembered not only for her remarkable age but for her boundless love, unwavering spirit, and the joy she brought to all who knew her. She loved her family a bushel and a peck. She might have lived to 106, but she changed her mind.
