WESTFIELD - Former longtime Daleville resident Ann Louise (Cannon) Talley, 80, Westfield, passed away Thursday, Sept. 22, 2022, at Wellbrooke of Westfield after an extended illness.
She was born Oct. 28, 1941, in Muncie, the daughter of Fred and Mary (Schlegel) Cannon.
She and her loving husband, Jerry Talley, were married Aug. 8, 1959.
She was a 1959 graduate of Daleville High School and attended Ball State University where she received her bachelor of science degree in education in 1963 and was certified to teach vocational home economics. In 1979, she received her master of arts degree in home economics and minors in business and economics from BSU.
Ann was a dedicated employee of Ball State University for 42 years where she served as food production manager, unit manager, then Director of Residence Halls Dining Service and University Banquet and Catering until her retirement in 2006. During her years as Director, she was known for her excellent negotiation and organizational skills as well as her creative innovation in developing concepts for updating food service locations to include state-of-the-art food courts such as Noyer Centre, Woodworth Commons and The Atrium in the Art and Journalism Building. She incorporated professional chefs into the staffing of each food service. She directed the development of an exceptional catering department. Burris Laboratory School food services, campus retail food stores, and The Retreat, a faculty-staff restaurant. She introduced computer technology throughout the food service offices, food purchasing, standard recipe files, cash register system and menu management system for over 40 food concepts on the Ball State campus. She valued and acknowledged the hard work and contributions of the food services employees and staff in these achievements.
In 1997, Ball State University presented her with the Outstanding Administrative Service Award and in 2003 she received the Family and Consumer Sciences Alumni Award. In 2004, Ann was inducted into the Indiana Restaurant & Hospitality Association Hall of Fame, the first college and university professional to be so honored in the state of Indiana.
Following her retirement, she authored a family cookbook "Final Legacy" containing over 400 treasured recipes and was contributing editor of The Legion Family Cookbook 2011 for the Chesterfield Legion Auxiliary Unit #408.
She was a prolific reader of fiction and non-fiction, collected cookbooks and recipes, enjoyed crafting, and most of all loved cooking for family and friends.
She was a member of Phi Upsilon Omicron, National Home Economics Honorary; Daleville United Methodist Church, past choir member, church school teacher and youth leader; Chesterfield American Legion Auxiliary Unit #408, past president and past chaplain; and the Madison County Ladies Shrine, past secretary. She was a past member of the Daleville American Legion Auxiliary Unit #446, where she served three terms as president as well as chaplain and secretary. In 1996 she was awarded the Outstanding Member Service Award by American Legion Post #446.
She is survived by son, Bob (wife, Tammy) Talley of Anderson; daughter, Cheryl Mattingly of Indianapolis; granddaughter, Jessica Talley; grandson, James "JP" Mattingly of Chicago; two great-grandsons, Giovanni and Elijah; two step grandchildren, Eric (wife, Morgan) Everitt and Jennifer (wife, April) Everitt, all of Anderson; two stepgreat-granddaughters, Brynlyn and Avery Everitt; sister, Phyllis Stevenson of North Webster; sister, Thelma (husband, Don) Hatton of Phoenix, Arizona; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 1/2 years, Jerry Talley, on Feb. 14, 2022; mother and father, Mary Louise and Fred E. Cannon of Daleville; maternal grandparents, Eva Blanche Bosh Schlegel, and Arthur F. Schlegel; maternal step grandmothers, Carrie Roberts Davis Schlegel and Mary Edleman Schlegel of Daleville; paternal grandparents, Polly Ann "Minnie" Peyton Cannon and James "Bud" Cannon of Mitchell, Indiana, and Liberty, Kentucky; and brother-in-law, Jack Stevenson.
Also surviving are many friends especially those at Independence Village of Zionsville.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ballard and Sons Funeral Home, 8212 S. Walnut St., Daleville, with Marty Ballard officiating. Burial will follow in Crownland Cemetery in Noblesville.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday prior to the service.
